Sylvester Umaru Onu, retired justice of the Supreme Court, 73, June 15. Born in Egume, Dekina local government area of Kogi State, he was educated at St Boniface Catholic School, Idah; Abdul-Aziz Attah Memorial College, Okene, 1955-1958; Government College, Keffi, 1959-1960; Legal Wing, Institute of Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, 1961-1962; Gibson and Weldon College of Law, 1962-1963; School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, 1963. He was called to the British Bar, 1965. Onu was magistrate, and was later appointed High Court judge in Benue State, 1976-1983; justice, Court of Appeal, 1984-1993; justice, Supreme Court of Nigeria from 1993, until he retired in 2008. Onu was the first winner of Sir Lionel Brett Prize as the best student in criminal law, Nigeria Law School, 1965.
