Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former chief justice of Nigeria, 75, June 12. Born in Kaduna, Kaduna State, he was educated at the Institute of Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria; the University of London and Inn of Court, School of Law, London. He was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple, London, 1963. Uwais was assistant publicity secretary at the ministry of information, Northern Nigeria between 1959 and 1964; state counsel, 1966-1970; acting chief judge of Kaduna State, 1976. He moved to the Court of Appeal, 1979-1985, and became the acting chief justice of Nigeria, 1991-1992 and the chief justice of Nigeria in 1995. He was appointed to head a committee that reviewed the nation’s electoral laws by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua in 2007.
